It’s Q&A’s like this, from owner Paul Johnson, that typify the purpose of this “Meet” series. The answers are informative, yet personal, as they come from experience of actually living in the area. Perfect for time poor renters who want to get a feel for the owner and his 2 bedroom Kendal apartment in a few minutes…
“We live and work (in tourism) in the area… The town is a great year-round destination and, being where we also live, means we can be on hand if required whilst at the same time allowing our guests total privacy”.
1) Tell us a little about your holiday let
We bought our vacation rental in December 2009 and opened for Easter 2010. It is a luxurious riverside apartment in the market town of Kendal, Cumbria – situated between two of England’s most beautiful National Parks: the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.
2) What made you buy the holiday let – was it financial, emotional, a connection with the area, or something else?
We live and work (in tourism) in the area and had been on the look-out for a good quality property for some time. We had felt that Kendal was crying out for top quality self-catering accommodation and we were keen to fill that gap in the market. The town is a great year-round destination and, being where we also live, means we can be on hand if required whilst at the same time allowing our guests total privacy.
3) What’s the best thing about the region your holiday let is located in? Is it the scenery, the pace of life, the locals, the activities, etc?
A holiday in Kendal gives you the best of both worlds. You are perfectly positioned between two of England’s most beautiful National Parks – the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales – whilst retaining all the conveniences and amenities of a town centre location. Kendal has lots of restaurants, cafés and bars, a thriving arts centre and a friendly community feel.
4) What are the 3 special touches you add to enhance the guest experience?
1. We can arrange for your own private chef to come in and conjur up a delicious meal for you. Since when does self-catering means you have to cater for yourself?!
2. We provide free broadband WiFi and a telephone that allows guests to make local and national telephone calls for free.
3. We have fresh herbs growing on the balcony which guests are welcome to help themselves to.
Plus there are one or two other extras that you’ll own know about if you come and stay!
5) If a guest had just one day in your holiday let what would you recommend they do for the perfect experience?
Wake up to a breakfast on your own riverside balcony and soak up the view as the River Kent trickles by and the sun rises over Kendal Castle.
From then on, the world’s your oyster with both the Lakes and the Dales just a short distance away. You might like to hop on the train to Windermere and take a leisurely stroll up Orrest Head for a wonderful view of the lake. Alternatively, you could tackle one of the bigger peaks and still be back down in time for lunch at the Drunken Duck Inn near Ambleside, perhaps washed down with a pint of Tag Lag from their microbrewery next door. If instead you ventured to the Dales, the Wensleydale Heifer serves as an equally good place to stop for lunch. It’s a pub restaurant about as far from the coast as you can get in England and yet still managed to earn the AA Seafood Pub of the Year award.
In the afternoon, you could browse Kendal’s shops and attractions. The K Village retail outlet re-opened this year after completing a £15m renovation. There’s also Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal Castle, Kendal Museum or the Quaker Tapestry Museum, all just a short walk from the apartment.
Finish the day with a takeaway from Chang Thai in Kendal and a cosy evening in with a bottle of wine and a DVD, or head out for a meal at the New Moon Restaurant and take in one of the events at the Brewery Arts Centre just opposite the restaurant before ambling home to a good night’s sleep on your super-comfortable super-king size bed.
