Cabo de Gata Nijar is not only one of the most important coastal areas of outstanding natural beauty but also the most important areas the largest and most ecologically important marine site in the whole of the Western Mediteranean.
It includes a Special Protection area for Birds (SPA 1989), a Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar 1989), the Salinas del Cabo de Gata Biosphere Reserve (1997) and is a Specially Protected Area Mediterreanean (Spam 2001)
It boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the whole of the Mediterranean and indeed the Iberian peninsular, including the famous Playa de los Muertos.
The little bay of Agua Amarga is a must - three bars/restaurants right on the sandy beach, which has the advantage of being very quiet outside of high season.
